ContourROAM Action Camera: My Newest Toy
When you want an abuse-tolerant camera, but don't want to shell out the $$$ for a GoPro... Hello folk. I just wanted to share the latest acquisition to my camera arsenal, the ContourROAM (gen 1). These things are on-sale at Amazon for just a hair over $100, because the second generation Contour action cam was recently released and they're trying to get rid of inventory. For those of you who've been living under a rock, Contour is one of the higher-profile competitors to the GoPro line of do-anything cameras.Although GoPro tends to dominate the market in sports and other energy-drink-sponsorship-hunting activities, the starting price of $200 to break into their lineup might be a little steep for the aspiring action-vlogger. That's not to say the prices are unwarranted, GoPro's latest Black Edition is a high-quality marvel. But it may not be an impulse buy. Ditto the similar Sony Action Cams. And that's where Contour comes in...For $109, the ContourROAM is something I'd be truly comfortable strapping to the hood of a car or something. It's waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes (enough to cover the accidental drop at the beach or something) with an optional 30-meter rated case. They even toss in a couple adhesive mounts. Not bad at all. I bought a 16 GB micro SD card to use with my cam.I have a couple projects planned for this little thing, including:
- POV Gun CameraSnorriCamAuxiliary Timelapse Cam
But you'll have to wait until later this summer to see if those projects bear fruit. I'll probably be posting some test-footage this week, unlisted so I don't spam my subscribers, so stay tuned to my site if you're at all interested... or... keep clicking my links from Facebook...I know going into this experiment that the color and dynamic range aren't going to be fantastic... but nonetheless I'm excited to see what kind of shots this little toy can get me.
